Faculty Development Program

The Kansas City Professional Development Council (KCPDC) has developed a program to provide faculty with the tools and resources for becoming more effective in the classroom. Full-time and adjunct faculty who choose to complete the six core classes and an additional two elective offerings will receive a certificate for the successful completion of 24 hours of study.

A dessert or breakfast will be served along with a beverage with each class.

Core Courses:

  • Instructional Strategies - Oct. 9, 2009

    Time: 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

    Location: Baker - Overland Park, Room 117, 7301 College Blvd

    Presenter: Carol Fagan

    Description: As a result of attending this workshop, faculty attendees will be able to:

    • Establish clear student learning outcomes
    • Identify and apply a wide variety of instructional strategies
    • Facilitate student learning by aligning methods with outcomes
    • Determine the value of currently used strategies
    • Relate the levels of learning in Bloom's taxonomy to methods of instruction
    • Develop a learner centered philosophy of instruction
    • Move student learning to higher level thinking skills per Bloom's taxonomy
  • Evaluating Student Learning - Oct. 10, 2009

    Description: As a result of attending this workshop, faculty attendees will be able to:

    • Create assessment tools in relation to learning outcomes
    • Identify and apply a wide variety of assessment strategies
    • Create assessment tools that address higher level thinking skills
    • Integrate test analysis and correction as part of the student learning process
    • Create and use rubrics to guide assessment
    • Use formative and summative assessments as well as alternatives
  • Managing the Learning Environment - Nov. 13, 2009

    Description: As a result of attending this workshop, faculty attendees will be able to:

    • Determine how arrangement and teacher placement impact learning models for managing the classroom environment and students
    • Choose among several strategies to increase student participation
    • Encourage students to become more responsible for their choices
  • Diversity in the Classroom - Feb. 5, 2010

    Time: 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

    Description: As a result of attending this workshop, faculty attendees will be able to:
    This course provides an introduction to multicultural education aims and methods as well as a look at the relevance of local history. Participants will be exposed to concrete methods of studying race, class, and gender inequalities. They will probe these issues as co-investigators and share their own best practices

  • Active Learning - Apr. 23, 2010

    Time: 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

    Location: Park University

    Presenter: Kate Duffy

    Description: This workshop provides training that is both didactic and participative. Small working groups are used to consider several scenarios provided by the trainer, and discussion within the buzz groups occurs. These buzz groups are then reorganized and comments and questions are fielded.

  • Writing Across the Curriculum - Apr. 24, 2010

    Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

    Location: Park University

    Presenter: Kate Duffy

    Description: This course is designed to familiarize instructors with writing across the curriculum theories and techniques that can be used immediately in any course. Using WAC strategies enables students to learn and cement new concepts more deeply. After taking this workshop, instructors will be able to develop writing assignments that will help them know if the students have mastered the process of learning as well as course content.

  • Legal Issues - Nov. 14, 2009

    Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

    Location: KCKCC, Room 3398, Upper Jewell Building

    Presenter: Dr. Dennis Day, Vice President of Student Services at JCCC

    Description: The class is designed to provide the faculty with an understanding of a variety of legal issues that apply to their jobs. The class will discuss Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), harassment and student conduct in the classroom. This program will also include time for discussion about current legal issues and practical tips for faculty in the classroom.

  • How to Start a Learning Community - Feb. 6, 2010

    Time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

    Location: Baker - Overland Park, Room 208

    Presenter: Anne Mahoney

    Description: As a result of attending this workshop, faculty attendees will be able to:

    • Develop a syllabus that includes learning outcomes integrating two or more interdisciplinary courses
    • Identify the three characteristics faculty teaching learning communities should have
    • Create a learning environment that encourages collaborative and interdisciplinary learning
    • Develop learning strategies that encourage community within the classroom
    • Explain the difference between a linked and an integrated learning community
    • Demonstrate the value of instructors being co-learners with the students and learning the language of another discipline
    • Create a learning environment that encourages critical thinking within and across disciplines
    • Demonstrate how interdisciplinary knowledge can be applied to real world experiences
